Sunny Isles Beach Ocean Rescue Earns National Recognition - May 14, 2026

City’s Ocean Rescue Division Achieves National Certification

The City of Sunny Isles Beach’s Ocean Rescue Division has earned national certification from the United States Lifesaving Association, a prestigious acknowledgment of their commitment to public safety and high standards in ocean rescue operations. This certification places Sunny Isles Beach among a select group of agencies nationwide recognized for meeting advanced safety benchmarks. To achieve this, the division underwent a thorough review of its policies, training programs, and operational procedures, aligning them with USLA guidelines. Key improvements included a revamped swim test, enhanced training protocols, and ensuring all lifeguards are certified Emergency Medical Technicians or Emergency Medical Responders. Police Chief Eddie Santiago stated this accomplishment reflects the city’s continued commitment to professional excellence. The city also has several community events scheduled, including a City Commission Workshop today, May 14, and a community beach cleanup on May 16 to help keep the beaches beautiful. Residents can also take advantage of mobile driver license services offered in partnership with the Miami Dade County Tax Collector’s Office on May 16. In a recent address, Mayor Larisa Svechin reflected on a successful spring season of community connection, highlighting well attended events like the city’s anniversary celebration and the Egg Scramble.

Major Developments Reshaping the Skyline

Sunny Isles Beach continues its transformation into a global luxury destination with several significant real estate projects underway. Construction and development are causing some temporary closures, including a southbound sidewalk closure on Collins Avenue near Heritage Park through June 1, 2026. Additionally, the Collins and Harding Roadway Re-Alignment project is progressing. Looking at the skyline, the Bentley Residences, the world’s first Bentley branded residential tower, is anticipated to be completed in the second half of the decade. The St. Regis Residences, a two tower project, is targeting a 2026 completion for its first tower. The most significant new project is the recently approved Miami Beach Club, a 62 story condominium at 19051 Collins Avenue. This 820 foot tower will become the tallest building in Sunny Isles Beach. The developers, a joint venture including Related Group and Dezer Development, received approval for the 145 unit luxury building, which will replace the old Miami Beach Club.

Beach and Ocean Conditions

The ocean conditions in Sunny Isles Beach are currently favorable for swimming and beach activities. The wave heights are not expected to exceed 3 feet 3 inches, making the sea suitable for swimming. The water temperature is a warm 84 degrees Fahrenheit (28.7 degrees Celsius). Lifeguard towers are flying green flags, indicating calm conditions, though swimmers should always exercise caution and check with lifeguards on duty. The significant wave height is approximately 2 feet with a dominant wave period of 10 seconds. For beachgoers, low tide is expected in the late morning.

Other Local Updates

In other local news, the city continues to focus on public safety and community engagement. The cities of Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach have jointly launched the Intracoastal Police Athletic League (IPAL), an initiative aimed at providing local youth with athletic and leadership opportunities. This program is designed to foster positive relationships between police officers and young residents. The city also recently adopted an ordinance restricting the use of motorized scooters to individuals aged 16 and older, who must carry a government issued ID while riding. This measure was taken to enhance pedestrian safety and walkability throughout the city, following a survey that gathered feedback from nearly 1,900 residents.
