City Focuses on Safety and Community Events
The City of Sunny Isles Beach continues to prioritize public safety and community engagement. The city government’s official news source highlights several upcoming public meetings, including a Commission Workshop today, August 26, to review the Fiscal Year 2026 to 2027 budget, and a Special Magistrate Hearing scheduled for August 27. Residents are also invited to an ‘End of Summer Bash: Hawaiian Luau’ on August 28, 2026. In an effort to enhance safety, the city is actively participating in the Florida Department of Transportation’s High Visibility Enforcement Program to reduce traffic related injuries. This initiative complements a recently adopted ordinance that restricts the use of electric bicycles to individuals aged 16 and older. Commuters should be aware of several ongoing lane and sidewalk closures, including a southbound closure on the 15800 block of Collins Avenue and a sidewalk closure at 19370 Collins Avenue, both extending through August 31. A major S.R. A1A/Collins Avenue Roadway Improvement Project is also underway.
Real Estate and Construction Updates
The Sunny Isles Beach skyline is poised for continued transformation with major construction projects underway. The City Commission recently approved a new 62 story oceanfront condominium tower at 19051 Collins Avenue, adding to the roster of ultra luxury developments. Other significant projects in the pipeline include the dual tower St. Regis Residences and the Bentley Residences, which is set to become the city’s tallest building upon completion. While the pre construction market for these luxury units remains active, the resale market is showing signs of adjustment. Recent data indicates the median sale price for homes in the area was $610,000 over the last three months, which represents a decrease compared to the previous year. This creates a notable distinction between the pricing for new developments, driven by the scarcity of oceanfront property, and the pricing for existing inventory which is more influenced by current market conditions and carrying costs.
Beach and Ocean Conditions
Beachgoers can enjoy favorable conditions today in Sunny Isles Beach. The ocean is calm with a low hazard level, indicated by the green flags flying from lifeguard towers. The water temperature is a warm 89 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect for swimming. Today’s surf is minimal, with waves around one foot, making it ideal for family activities. Winds are light, coming from the southeast at approximately 5 mph. Low tide occurred around 1:04 PM, providing an excellent opportunity for walking on the wider shoreline. Beach visitors should note that there is a possibility of sargassum washing ashore. A heat advisory is in effect, and the UV index is very high, so using sunscreen is strongly recommended.
Recent Police Activity and Arrests
The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department has been active in the community, responding to two separate and concerning incidents involving child neglect in the past week. In one case, a father was arrested on Wednesday after his 4 year old son was found wandering alone along Collins Avenue. A passerby alerted a police officer to the unsupervised child. In a separate incident reported last Saturday, a 41 year old woman was arrested and charged with child neglect after allegedly leaving her 6 year old son alone at Town Center Park for nearly an hour. According to reports, the boy approached a witness stating he was scared and hungry. These events have brought a renewed focus on child safety and parental responsibility within the community.
