Roadway Projects and Luxury Developments Continue to Reshape Sunny Isles Beach - June 19, 2024

City Announces Major Roadwork and Ongoing Closures

The City of Sunny Isles Beach continues to manage significant infrastructure and development projects, leading to several traffic advisories for residents and visitors. A nightly lane and sidewalk closure is in effect on Collins Avenue at 18590, impacting eastbound and southbound traffic from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. through Friday, June 19. Additionally, a sidewalk closure is in place 24 hours a day on southbound Collins Avenue at 19370 until July 1, 2026. Looking ahead, the Florida Department of Transportation has a major roadway improvement project scheduled to begin on June 30, 2026, on Collins Avenue from the 163 Street bridge to 178 Street, which is expected to last for approximately six months. These projects are part of the city’s ongoing efforts to upgrade infrastructure alongside the rapid pace of private development.

Skyline Transformation with Luxury Residences

The city’s skyline is in the midst of a dramatic transformation with several high profile luxury residential towers under construction. The 62 story Bentley Residences and the dual tower St. Regis Residences are among the most prominent approved developments that are well underway. These projects promise to bring a new standard of opulent living to the area, featuring expansive floor plans and premium amenities. The Bentley Residences, for example, will feature a unique car elevator that allows residents to park their vehicles directly in their private sky garage. The real estate market remains active, highlighted by the recent sale of the Solé Miami resort on Collins Avenue. Mast Capital sold the 249 key hotel to South Street Partners, who plan significant upgrades, signaling strong investor confidence in the Sunny Isles Beach hospitality and luxury market.

Beach and Ocean Conditions

Beachgoers should exercise some caution this week. The most recent reports from the Sunny Isles Beach Ocean Rescue division indicated green and purple flags flying. A green flag suggests calm conditions, however the purple flag serves as a warning for the presence of potentially dangerous marine life, specifically jellyfish. Surf is expected to be minimal, with wave heights generally calm and under one meter, making it suitable for swimming. Water temperatures are very warm, consistent with the season. Visitors are always encouraged to check the flags on lifeguard towers for the most current conditions before entering the water.

Police Department Activity in the Spotlight

A recent report has drawn attention to the law enforcement activities within the city. The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department, alongside the Miami Springs Police Department, was noted for having the highest number of immigration related arrests among all municipalities in Miami Dade County since last August. The report, published by local news outlets, has placed a spotlight on the city’s policing strategies and its cooperation with federal immigration authorities. This news comes as the department continues its regular duties, including managing traffic for the numerous construction projects and ensuring public safety throughout the increasingly busy city.
