Sunny Isles Beach Advances Budget Focused on Public Safety Amidst Real Estate Boom - August 31, 2024

City Focuses on Fiscal Responsibility and Community Safety

The City of Sunny Isles Beach is moving forward with its proposed Fiscal Year 2026 to 2027 budget, which prioritizes public safety and infrastructure investments. Mayor Larisa Svechin has highlighted that the proposed budget includes a reduction in the operating millage rate, potentially keeping Sunny Isles Beach with the lowest municipal millage rate in Miami Dade County. This budget allocates funds for additional police officers to enhance public safety services. In a measure to improve traffic safety, the city will begin issuing photo enforced parking citations by mail for violations at the public parking lot on 175 Terrace. The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department is also actively participating in the Florida Department of Transportation’s High Visibility Enforcement Program to reduce traffic related injuries. Looking ahead, the city has a Special City Commission Meeting for the first budget hearing scheduled for September 8, 2026. Residents are also invited to the grand opening of the new Intracoastal Sports Park on September 3, 2026.

Skyline Transformation Continues with Luxury Developments

The Sunny Isles Beach skyline is undergoing a dramatic transformation with several ultra luxury condominium projects making significant progress. Construction on the 62 story Bentley Residences has now surpassed the seventh level and is rising steadily, poised to become the city’s tallest building upon completion. Another major project, the dual tower St. Regis Residences, has seen major construction milestones with vertical construction now underway for the south tower. The City Commission also recently approved a new 62 story oceanfront condominium tower, further solidifying the city’s reputation as a premier destination for luxury living. While new developments continue, the resale market is currently favoring buyers, with an increase in the supply of homes. The median home price has seen a decrease compared to the previous year.

Beach and Ocean Conditions

Beachgoers in Sunny Isles Beach can enjoy warm waters with temperatures around 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius). Today’s conditions feature yellow flags, indicating moderate surf or currents. The wind is from the southeast at 10 to 15 mph. High tides for today are expected at 10:20 AM and 10:31 PM, with a low tide at 4:26 PM. The UV index is high, so sun protection is strongly advised. Swimmers should be aware of a jellyfish advisory currently in effect.

Infrastructure Projects and Traffic

Several infrastructure improvement projects are underway, leading to some temporary lane and sidewalk closures. A major S.R. A1A/Collins Avenue Roadway Improvement Project is in progress. There is a southbound lane and sidewalk closure on the 15800 block of Collins Avenue and a sidewalk closure at 19370 Collins Avenue, both extending through August 31. A beach access point at 18401 Collins Avenue is also temporarily closed until September 21. These projects are part of the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and public amenities. The city is also proceeding with the Bella Vista Bay Park Renovation, which will include new public bathrooms and a concession area.
