City of Sunny Isles Beach Announces Youth Writing Contest and Community Events
The City of Sunny Isles Beach is encouraging civic engagement from its younger residents with the announcement of the Florida City Week Writing Contest. This contest invites students in grades 6 through 8 to share their ideas for improving the city. In addition to this new initiative, the city is preparing for its upcoming ‘Booogie by the Beach’ event on October 23 and 24, and a ‘Full Moon Yoga on the Beach’ session scheduled for October 26. These events are part of the city’s ongoing efforts to provide engaging recreational activities for its residents and foster a strong sense of community. Recently, the city celebrated the grand opening of the new Intracoastal Sports Park, adding to the area’s recreational facilities. To keep residents informed, a City Commission Workshop was held on October 13 to review the agenda for their upcoming meeting.
Sunny Isles Beach Skyline to Transform with New Luxury Developments
The Sunny Isles Beach skyline is set for a major transformation with the approval of several new luxury condominium towers. The St. Regis Residences, a dual tower 62 story project, has received its site plan approval and is moving forward. Also given the green light is The Miami Beach Club, another 62 story condominium development. Construction is already underway on the 62 story Bentley Residences, which is anticipated to be completed around 2027. This wave of development comes as a recent study has raised concerns about the structural integrity of coastal high rises. The study indicated that many buildings in the area, including some in Sunny Isles Beach, have shown signs of sinking, a phenomenon known as subsidence. While engineers have stated there is no immediate danger, the potential for ‘differential settlement’, where different parts of a building sink at varying rates, has become a topic of discussion. The real estate market for older buildings is currently favoring buyers, with a notable drop in the median sale price.
Beach and Ocean Conditions
Beachgoers in Sunny Isles Beach are advised to be cautious of the current conditions. Yellow and purple flags are currently flying, indicating moderate surf or currents and the presence of marine pests, specifically jellyfish. A rip current statement is also in effect for the area, posing a potential danger to swimmers. Visitors to the beach should remain aware of their surroundings and heed any warnings from lifeguards.
Other Local News
In other local news, a Sunny Isles Beach man is facing an aggravated battery charge after allegedly shooting his friend following a dinner at the Millennium Condominiums. The incident occurred on Wednesday night, and the victim was treated for a graze wound to his heel at the scene. Authorities reported that the suspect claimed the firearm discharged accidentally. Motorists should also be aware of a southbound lane and sidewalk closure on 17800 Atlantic Blvd. from Sunday, October 18 through Thursday, October 22.
