City Initiatives and Community Happenings
The City of Sunny Isles Beach is buzzing with activity and civic engagement. A recent announcement invites middle school students in grades 6 through 8 to participate in the Florida City Week Writing Contest, an initiative to encourage young residents’ involvement in civic life. [9, 17] Residents can also look forward to upcoming community events designed to foster a strong sense of community. The festive ‘Booogie by the Beach’ is scheduled for October 23 and 24, and a serene ‘Full Moon Yoga on the Beach’ will take place on October 26. [8, 9] In local governance, the city commission held a workshop to review their upcoming meeting agenda, continuing their commitment to transparent governance. [3, 8] On the infrastructure front, motorists should be aware of a southbound lane and sidewalk closure on 17800 Atlantic Boulevard, which will be in effect through Thursday, October 22. [8] Additionally, the playground at Samson Oceanfront Park is currently closed for a complete replacement and is expected to reopen on October 19. [10, 12] In political news, the mayoral race is heating up between current Mayor Larisa Svechin and former Mayor Dana Goldman, with both candidates actively campaigning. [25]
Real Estate and Construction Updates
The skyline of Sunny Isles Beach is undergoing a dramatic transformation with the approval and construction of several new luxury condominium towers. The St. Regis Residences, a dual tower 62 story project, has received its site plan approval and is moving forward. [8, 10, 13] Joining the roster of impressive high rises are the 62 story Bentley Residences, which is currently under construction, and The Miami Beach Club, another 62 story condominium development that has also been given the green light. [3, 8, 10] However, this period of significant growth is shadowed by a recent study that has raised concerns about the structural integrity of coastal high rises. The study indicated that many buildings in the area, including some in Sunny Isles Beach, have shown signs of sinking, a phenomenon known as subsidence. [3, 8, 9, 13] While engineers have stated there is no immediate danger, the potential for differential settlement, where different parts of a building sink at varying rates, has become a topic of discussion among property owners. The broader real estate market for older buildings is currently favoring buyers, with analysis showing that a significant number of single family homes have sold below their asking price. [8, 10, 11]
Beach and Ocean Conditions
Beachgoers in Sunny Isles Beach are advised to exercise caution and be aware of the current conditions. Yellow and purple flags have been flying, indicating moderate surf or currents and the presence of marine pests, specifically jellyfish. [8, 9] A rip current statement is in effect for the area, posing a danger to swimmers. [8] It is important for all visitors to the shore to be mindful of these warnings. In addition to these conditions, the Regalia Beach Access at 19575 Collins Avenue remains closed until further notice due to significant beach erosion. [8, 12] Visitors should plan to use alternative access points to the beach.
Other Important Local News
In a recent public safety incident, a Sunny Isles Beach man was arrested and is facing an aggravated battery charge. Police said he shot his friend in the heel with a firearm following a dinner at his condominium on the evening of Wednesday, October 15. [7, 9, 14] The victim received medical treatment at the scene. In other news, the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department has launched an innovative ‘Drone as a First Responder’ program. This program is the first of its kind for a law enforcement agency in Florida and aims to improve emergency response times and effectiveness. [8] The city’s leadership is also in a state of transition, as the city manager recently offered his resignation, which will be effective in November. [6]
